Spring Planting Completed!

The Holden Beach Beautification Club plants the gardens and public spaces of Holden Beach twice each year, in spring and fall. The spring planting for all the gardens has been completed. Thanks to the hardworking Landscaping Committee for making the gardens look gorgeous, just in time for the Festival!

Annual Donation Drive Begins

HBBC designs, plants, decorates and maintains the public areas of Holden Beach.  This includes Padgett Garden (above), Town Hall, and the other gardens.

Each year we ask for donations to continue our work and this year donations are especially important.  If you would like to contribute to the club’s work you may do so in two ways:

  • Send a check made out to HBBC of any amount to Vicki Myers, HBBC Treasurer, 301 Ocean Blvd. West, Holden Beach, NC 28462,

The Holden Beach Beautification Club is a 501C(3) Nonprofit and your donation may be tax-deductible.

We are grateful for any contribution you can make!

April HBBC Meeting

Our April 12 meeting will be at a different time – 2:00pm. Margaret Shelton of Shelton Herb Farm will demonstrate growing “salad bowls” for us. Everyone is welcome!

Getting Ready for Spring!

The Holden Beach Beautification Club is prepping for springtime. The spent annuals have been removed from Padgett Garden, The Boat, Butterfly Garden, the beds along Jordan Boulevard, and Town Hall.

Pocket Park, at 628 OBW, has received some special attention from “The Undertakers” as they call themselves. Two dead trees and their roots were removed and as well as a diseased Eastern Red Cedar. The ornamental birdhouses were removed from posts to be repainted. This small gem of a park is a favorite with walkers and bikers as it offers a viewing deck with seating that overlooks the marsh. It is a difficult park to manage because it also serves as a floodway during storms which leads to lots of saltwater on the plants.

The new plants are on order from local nurseries for all the gardens and beds around Town. They will be installed in March or early April (depending on plant availability) followed by mulching.

Fall Planting

HBBC adds fresh annual plants every spring and fall to the Town’s gardens. The Landscaping committee, chaired by Gayle Todd, recently completed the planting for this fall. Annuals were added to Padgett Garden, Padgett Garden Extension, The Boat Garden, Butterfly Garden, Town Hall and Pocket Park. In addition, a few perennials were added as well. Thanks to the Landscaping Committee for getting the gardens ready for cooler weather!

Butterfly Garden Fence

HBBC recently added a vinyl fence to delineate the Butterfly Garden and serve as a backdrop for plantings. The Butterfly Garden is located at the Fire Station on the island, 574 OBW, and features butterfly and pollinator friendly plantings such as milkweed. A variety of perennials grace the garden along with annuals which are replaced each Fall and Spring. The plantings took a beating during Hurricane Ian flooding but the damaged perennials will be replaced and the annuals will be refreshed. The garden also features statuary, butterfly houses, and a picnic table. Hope you can stop by!

October Yard of the Month

The Holden Beach Beautification Club has selected the gardens of Larry and Donna Blume, 108 Lions Paw, as the October, 2022, yard of the month.   The Blumes  moved here 11 years ago.  They have created a beautiful flow and variety of flowers and colors that frame their home. They have such plants as siberian iris, mums, sedum, lilies, mexican heather, pansies, and more.  There are touches of hardscape stepping stones and whimsical seahorses.  A lovely palette!

August Yard of the Month

The Holden Beach Beautification Club has selected the yard of Caren Bills and Bob Steele as the August 2022 yard of the month.  The couple’s yard, at 206 Brunswick Avenue W., features an array of delightful blooming plants such as zinnias, gerbera daisies, oleander, black-eyed susans, and hydrangeas. These plants are framed by shiny shrubs, sago palms, and even a ginkgo tree. It’s obvious they enjoy their yard and home with its wonderful outdoor seating areas, and slightly hidden quiet garden in the back.

July Yard of the Month

The home of Vann and Janet Carter at 123 Durham Street is a joyful space with several different garden areas.  You are greeted at the driveway fence with a soft-colored new dawn rose.  There is an abundance of hydrangea, along with daylilies, gaura, Gerber daisies, blueberries, plumbago, pineapple lilies, and agapanthus…just to name some of the plants.  The garden spaces make the most of their lot and they enjoy it daily!
