We are so excited that our major project for the year has been completed! This year the Holden Beach Beautification Club repaired the irrigation systems in the Town’s gardens which we plant and care for. The systems were very old and not functioning correctly and either didn’t provide water or provided too much water. The project was completed just in time. New blooming perennials will be planted next week followed by seasonal summer annuals in a few weeks. As gardeners, we know how critical water is to the plants in our sandy soils. Congratulations to Landscaping Co-Chair Carol Ann Lohman for shepherding this project to completion along with Co-Chairs Tia Hegarty and Vicki Myers.
Tomorrow morning HBBC will be sponsoring a booth at the Holden Beach Farmers Market beside Anaya on the Causeway. Come see us Saturday between 10-3 for herbs, veggie plants, beautiful flowering plants, painted pots, and more! All the profits from this sale will be used to help us care for the garden areas on Holden Beach. Hope to see you there!
The Holden Beach Beautification Club welcomes Spring! Padgett Garden at the bridge welcomes residents and vacationers alike with blooming flowers including Daffodils, Snapdragons, Johnny Jump Ups, emerging grasses and Sedums. There is a path to stroll on and opportunities for photos with the kids. Enjoy!
The Seasonal Decor Committee has been hard at work this week getting ready for the holidays! Look for the new Crab Pot Christmas Trees we have added this year at Town Hall and Padgett Garden!
The Holden Beach Beautification Club has selected the yard of Adam and Cathy Donaldson, 119 Windjammer, as the November 2023 Yard of the Month. The yard is a peaceful, cheerful space which they very much enjoy tending to. They have put in sago palms, mums, coleus, hydrangeas, asters, ferns, lantana and a lemon tree. Butterflies abound! Adam and Kathy love living at Holden Beach with their sweet dog, Gus.
The Holden Beach Beautification Club met Wednesday, October 11 for our regular meeting. Instead of a speaker or demonstration, Club members created yard ornaments using old place settings and discarded wine bottles. Besides being decorative and adding a dose of whimsy to our yards, the creations can also be used to water plants if the owner is out of town.
New Member Robin Langley was welcomed to the group with the traditional gift of gardening gloves. Next month’s meeting will be the annual Thanksgiving Potluck lunch with members bringing their favorite holiday dishes – always a fun meeting!
The Holden Beach Beautification Club has chosen the home of Walt and Ashley Johnson at 120 Deal Street as the October 2023 yard of the month. They have a stunning view of the ICW and marsh which they have enhanced with their plants and hardscape. Palms and fountain grasses, along with knockout roses, lantana, and geraniums make for a lovely setting.
Padgett Garden has received an update. The “undertakers” gardeners have been hard at work already this year. A large stand of overgrown Canna lilies was removed along Ocean Blvd. to allow drivers to see into the garden. In addition, the Seasonal Decor Committee has placed fall decor in the garden, at Town Hall, and at the Boat on Jordan Blvd.
In November, the gardens will be planted with winter annuals to last until spring.
