The Holden Beach Beautification Club has chosen a yard on Brunswick Avenue West as the May Yard of the Month. Pam and Terry Lucas have a small but well tended garden with Mexican primrose, yellow bearded iris, daffodils, Purple Heart, purple verbena, mondo and muhly grasses, and day lilies. The yard also has a grouping of palm trees, a crepe Myrtle, and shell arrangements at the bases of the palms for an added artistic interest. Congratulations Terry and Pam!

The Town’s facilities are still closed to us but we couldn’t stand the thought of canceling the Plant Sale again this year! Our hardworking HBBC Plant Sale Committee has scoured all the quality nurseries in this part of NC and SC and picked some incredibly beautiful, healthy, locally-adapted plants for you to choose from. Our Club members have also grown plants from their own gardens for you to browse. Our Art Committee has items to brighten your home and garden as well! Back by popular demand – GLOVES! Everyone asks to buy these incredible gardening gloves and once you have tried them they will be your favorites too.
Stop by Anaya’s Friday, May 7th and see us. The best part of the plant sale is that proceeds are used to beautify Holden Beach!
The Easter Bunny visited Holden Beach and left springtime decor for us to enjoy! When you enter the island check out the colorful eggs, bunnies, and whirly-gigs in Padgett Garden. Thanks to Janet Carter (chair) and the Seasonal Decor Committee for their whimsical display!

Why Donate
HBBC designs, plants, decorates, and maintains the public areas of Holden Beach. This includes Padgett Garden (above), Town Hall and the other gardens. The 2020 Plant Sale, our major fundraiser, was canceled due to Covid-19 and we have no idea if this year’s sale will be canceled as well.
Each year we ask for donations to continue our work and this year donations are especially important. We recognize that people may be facing financial difficulties right now but if you would like to contribute to the club’s work you may do so in two ways:

Sponsorships are so important for HBBC this year. Our big Plant Sale was canceled last spring and who knows if we will get to have one this spring! Without Sponsors, HBBC wouldn’t have been able to carry on with our work of beautifying the island this year. Sponsorships help pay for things like the plants in Padgett Garden and the Holiday décor along with other tasks HBBC does all year long.

The Holden Beach Beautification Club has chosen the Christmas decorations at a home on Greensboro Street for our December Yard of the Month. The yard, belonging to Brian and Sandi Buchanan, is filled with lights on the porches and scattered throughout the front and back yards. There are palm trees with lights and ornaments, a brightly lit tree with presents, and most importantly, a serene nativity scene. Congratulations Brian and Sandi and thank you for adding some holiday joy for all of us!!
The Holden Beach Beautification Club completed its Fall Planting of the gardens. Padgett Garden and Town Hall were both planted with over 700 annuals including violas and snapdragons to add winter color.
Some of the gardens are still recovering after Hurricane Dorian this fall. Pocket Park was especially hard hit with flooding from the marsh. The saltwater inundation as well as the flow contributed to the devastation. The Club’s expert gardeners are watching closely and waiting until spring to determine what will survive and what will need to be replaced. We are hopeful that some of the damaged plants that look dead right now will come back this spring. In the meantime, we are enjoying the beautiful newly planted garden areas.
Did you see the Pumpkin Patch at Beaches -n- Cream the last few weeks? Virginia Williamson Elementary School PTA hosted the Pumpkin Patch as a fundraiser and provided an opportunity for locals and visitors to pick up some Halloween decor and help the school at the same time. After Halloween, our Seasonal Decor chair approached them about donating some of the leftovers to beautify the island. We are grateful to the Virginia Williamson Elementary PTA and Beaches-n-Cream for helping arrange it! Thanks for the pumpkins!
Covid-19 canceled the annual May Social and recognitions luncheon. Instead, the October Meeting was held outside with social distancing and recognitions were distributed at the meeting.
Member Carol Keane was recognized as a Golden Gardener signifying 15 years as a member. Secretary Denise Mirandola presented her with the traditional yellow rose.
For other club recognitions engraved garden stones are presented to the recipient. President Linda Rast was presented a stone recognizing her work as President for the ’19-’20 year by Marlene Barz.
President Linda Rast presented the Trowel Award to Becky Greene who chaired the Landscaping Committee for the ’19-’20 year. Becky was instrumental to Linda and assisted her in so many ways throughout the year not just in the area of landscaping. Becky helped with planning and SOPs and worked in-depth with maintenance requests for the town. Linda said, “She made the president job so much easier!”.
Secretary Denise Mirandola presented President Linda Rast with the Member of the Year Award. Linda was selected for this award by a confidential vote of the members of the Club.
Congratulations to these ladies for their hard work for the Club!
