Our hardworking Seasonal Decor Committee has been at it again, getting the island ready for Independence Day! New this year, the Committee made giant wooden firecrackers – the only fireworks allowed on Holden Beach! Look for them in Padgett Garden as you come off the bridge and also at Town Hall. We wish everyone a safe and fun Fourth of July!

The Holden Beach Beautification Club has selected the garden of Ron and Jane Skubic as the June garden of the month.  They have created a lovely garden that encompasses the entire outside space at their home on 144 Starfish. This is quite a feat given various canal floodings they had to contend with!  The variety of plants is both peaceful and vibrant at the same time, making a tapestry to enjoy each day. There is a welcoming bench, a few choice pieces of garden art, and paths leading to each different area.  There are lilies and daylilies, coreopsis, bluets, queen anne’s lace, egyngiums, hyacinths and roses, glads, coneflowers, iris, and hollyhocks;  just to name a few.  One picture doesn’t do the gardens justice! 

The Holden Beach Beautification Club has chosen the yard at 115 Sunshine Lane as the May Yard of the Month.  “Holden Shamrocks” is owned by Becky and Steve Greene and It’s evident that this yard didn’t happen by luck! Your eye is drawn to the many pink planters on the railing and the well-manicured zoysia grass.  When you look further you will find a huge weeping bottle brush, several plumeria, potted hibiscus not to mention an agave plant.  Look closer and you will see many bottle and glass art pieces (can you find the frog) all of which Becky created. Look at the colorful painted rain barrel, a gift from their son.  Congratulations Becky and Steve.

The Easter Bunny visited Holden Beach and left springtime decor for us to enjoy!  When you enter the island check out the colorful eggs, bunnies, and whirly-gigs in Padgett Garden.  Thanks to Janet Carter (chair) and the Seasonal Decor Committee for their whimsical display!

Next weekend the Gardens and Town Hall will be replanted with spring and summer annuals to brighten the display.

The Holden Beach Beautification Club welcomed Vicki Furhmann of the NC Extension Service and Master Gardeners to our March monthly meeting. Vicki spoke on Plant Propagation and then led a demonstration for members. She also discussed the importance of Milkweed for pollinators and especially Monarch Butterflies. Members took home seedlings they had repotted to nurture until it is warm enough to plant in the yard or in a pot.

For our December meeting HBBC decided to mix things up. Instead of a speaker we made Christmas ornaments. Tawanna DeAngelis, our Art Committee chair, led the group in making festive snowmen. Even those with no crafting skills were successful and the ornaments looked great!

Have you seen the holiday decor? The Seasonal Decorations Committee and friends have been busy in Padgett Garden, Town Hall, and at the Boat Garden. It looks festive during the day and gorgeous at night!
