Members get ready for Plant Sale 2018

The 2018 Plant Sale is in the books and was a great success!  We are still totaling up but it appears the 7th Annual sale topped last year’s record!  Thanks and congratulations to Plant Sale Chair Pat Schwaiger, the Plant Sale Committee, and the rest of the Club!  Thanks too to our Art Committee which crafted so many lovely items to support the sale.  A warm thank you also goes out to the Holden Beach community who supported the sale and our mission of beautifying Holden Beach.

Plant Sale Wraps Up Today!

Today is the last day of the 2018 Plant Sale!  Hours today are 9:00am to 3:00pm at the EOC building near the Food Lion on Sabbath Home Road.  There are still lots of gorgeous annuals and perennials to brighten up any landscape.  Click here for more information on our Plant Sale page.

There has been tremendous interest in plants removed from Padgett Garden during the recent renovation.  Padgett Garden is the waterfall garden at the foot of the bridge and Ocean Blvd often used for family photos.  This is the last chance to get Padgett Garden plants for your own garden.  There are Crinium Lily bulbs, roses, and other specimens available.  These plants make a fun and useful souvenir and will bloom for years.

Prices are great and all proceeds go to beautify the Holden Beach Gardens!  See you at the Plant Sale!

Plant Sale Time!

The Holden Beach Beautification Club is getting ready for the Annual Plant Sale.  Come by and see us this Friday and Saturday, 9am – 3pm at the EOC building on Sabbath Home Road.  This year looks to be the largest sale yet!  Gorgeous annuals and perennials in bloom, plus herbs, veggies, and much more!

This year only we will have plants that were saved from Padgett Garden during the renovation process.   This well-loved garden at the foot of the bridge, which has been the site of weddings and Christmas card photos for years, is getting a major renovation and many plants are being removed for transplanting to other island gardens.  Some of the plants will also be available at the Plant Sale.  Bring home a bit of Padgett Garden for your landscape!

We also have all the favorites people always want like geraniums, knock-out roses, and ornamental grasses as well as unique, hard to find specimens!  If you are coming for the Festival stop by the Plant Sale and pick up a plant as a special souvenir!  In addition, the talented ladies from our Art Committee have created items to enhance your garden.

The best part about the Plant Sale is that 100% of the proceeds go to buying landscaping plants and materials for the Town’s public gardens.

For more information and a map to the EOC Building check out the Plant Sale page on our website!

Designer Plants for Holden Beach

The Holden Beach Beautification Club welcomed Dane Fisher to the April Membership Meeting.  Dane is a horticulturist with an interest in growing plants that are adapted to Holden Beach.  He is currently working on coleus plants adapted to thrive in the sometimes harsh conditions found here.  He is breeding for drought tolerance, full sun, and other conditions that can make it difficult for our microclimate.

New members Marge Doyle, Judy Bayless and Sharon Berezo joined us.  Our hostesses for the meeting were Eve Venters, and Julia Anderson (co-chairs).  They were assisted by JoAnn Burke, and Sharon Butler.

Pocket Park Donations

HBBC received an exciting email from the Arion Family.  They are installing a pool and offered us the plants that would have been trashed during construction.  Our Landscaping Committee jumped on the offer and transplanted day lilies, irises, ice plant, oxalis, and amaryllis to Pocket Park, located at 628 Ocean Blvd. West.  As you can see from the photos the perennials were great additions to this lovely garden and will bloom for years to come.  The next time you are walking or biking Ocean Blvd. we hope you will take a moment to enjoy the beautiful marsh views and lovely landscaping at this tiny gem of a park.  We thank the Arion family for thinking of us!

Get Ready for the Plant Sale!

Spring is finally here and that means it is time for the annual Holden Beach Beautification Club Plant Sale.  This event is our largest fundraiser of the year and we depend on it to keep the island’s gardens looking great.  We will have a beautiful selection of annuals and perennials to brighten any home!

When:  Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28 (The weekend of Days at the Docks Festival) 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Where:  Emergency Operations Center, behind the Food Lion on Sabbath Home Road

This year’s sale is especially important.  We have begun the refurbishment of Padgett Garden.  You can read more about this large project by clicking here.  Some of the salvaged plants from this well-loved garden will be offered for sale at the Plant Sale.  You can add a part of Padgett Garden to your own landscape!

The other big news is that in conjunction with the Town, our club will be adding landscaping to Bridgeview Park.  A successful Plant Sale will help us add another layer of beauty to this gem of a park!

Did you know…

  • 100% of the proceeds from this fundraiser are used for plants and landscaping materials for the public gardens of Holden Beach

  • Club members plant the Town’s gardens twice each year, in spring and fall, with colorful annuals and are constantly tucking beach-friendly perennials into the Town’s gardens all over the island

  • Plants are grown locally at nurseries that support HBBC or are shared by members, and this year we will also have plants from Padgett Garden to take home.

  • Plants make great, lasting souvenirs to remember Holden Beach!

  • Can’t make it to the Plant Sale but still want to support it?  Consider sending a donation, it’s even tax deductible!  Click here.

Come out and support this worthwhile fundraiser and come away with not only a gorgeous plant for your home but knowing you helped make Holden Beach a little more beautiful!

Padgett Garden Refurbishment Begins

The first step of refurbishing Padgett Garden has started.  Some of the plants that will not remain after the new design is installed were removed and potted.  The plants were removed in anticipation of renewed soil and fresh young plantings to accent the Town’s planned sidewalk at Padgett Garden.  The sidewalk will meet ADA standards.  The removed plants will be transplanted to other Town garden spots and sold at the Plant Sale in April.  The project should be completed next week!

For more information on the plans for Padgett Garden click here.
