Memory Stones

Sunshine Committee Chair Carolyn Metrakos arranges the new Memory Stones in Padgett Garden.

When one of our members passes we honor them by placing a Memory Stone for them in Padgett Garden.  All HBBC members serve on a committee and contribute to our mission of beautifying Holden Beach.  While these members may no longer be with us we remember them and recognize their contributions to our organization.

July Yard of the Month

The Holden Beach Beautification Club chose a yard on Sailfish Drive for the July Yard of the Month. The yard belonging to Deborah Fish and Gregg Fiesenthaler is filled with so many colorful blooms including lantana, vinca, portulaca,  lavender, black-eyed Susan’s, and salvia.  There are brightly colored hydrangeas, mallow, coleus Verbena, and roses. Small yard ornaments add interest to the gardens. Drive by and take a look! Congratulations, Deborah and Gregg!

Halstead Park Hosts Successful Fishermen

Meet Weston, Alex, and Braden – they were caught enjoying Halsted Park yesterday. Weston told us they caught a crab and a fish and Alex told us the gardens looked fabulous!  HBBC recently refurbished the landscaping at Halstead Park.  This small park features a covered picnic area and a fishing dock on the ICW.

Halstead Park Gardens Get a Makeover!

The Holden Beach Beautification Club gave Halstead Park a much-needed makeover on Saturday.  This small park on the waterway at the end of Halstead St. features a picnic area and a fishing dock and has suffered from a lack of water and maintenance.  Members cleared dead vegetation and planted perennials and a few colorful annuals.   Still to come, a colorful new sign will be placed to identify the park.  Check out the before and after photos!

For this side bed, Club members removed dead and dying plants, transplanted the Purple Queen plant to a new spot, and added ornamental grasses and blooming perennials.

For the front flowerbed, the overgrown tree was trimmed up to allow breezes through to the picnic area.  Additional Purple Queen plant was transplanted and a few more perennials and annuals were added for color.  A volunteer palm was transplanted to a more appropriate spot.

Beside the trashcan area, a dead Muhly Grass was removed and the volunteer Palm was replanted in the spot.

Beside the walkway going to the dock, four new shrubs were planted to provide interest.   The Landscaping Committee chose Bottle Brush shrubs for this spot.  This plant is drought tolerant and blooms several times each year with red blooms that look like bottle brushes.  The blooms are favorites of butterflies, honey bees, and other pollinators.

Thanks to the Landscaping Committee for their hard work on a hot summer day!  They plan to continue to monitor and evaluate this park for further enhancements.  In the meantime, we hope that the fishermen and families who love this hidden gem of a park enjoy the improvements!

May Yard of the Month

The Holden Beach Beautification Club has chosen a yard on Carolina Avenue as May Yard of the Month. The home belongs to Bubba Rollins and Amanda Spence. The yard has multiple gardens filled with Purple Hearts, blooming dwarf daylilies, hibiscus, salvia, hydrangea, and phlox. There is a small herb garden, gardenias, potted succulents, and vitex. A palm tree and eucalyptus add beautiful texture to the front gardens. Amanda said she has pictures of the yard when her father was awarded Yard of the Month years ago. Congratulations, Amanda and Bubba! We hope this adds a little sunshine for them. They had to postpone their May wedding due to the pandemic.

Keep Holden Beach Beautiful – Become a Donor!

Coming over the bridge to the island, visitors and residents are treated to the sight of Padgett Garden:  blooming flowers and shrubs, the waterfall, the gravel walkway with benches.  We all love the entrance to our island.  Besides Padgett Garden, flowers bloom in front of Town Hall, Pocket Park welcomes weary walkers and bikers and other garden spots on the island are cared for by the Holden Beach Beautification Club.

Every year, the Club hosts a big Plant Sale to raise funds for the purchase of flowers, shrubs and other landscaping needs on the island and at the foot of the bridge.  However, this year the Plant Sale (our largest fundraiser) had to be canceled.  Every year we solicit donations, but this year we need your help to make up the shortfall.  Property Owners received a flier in their April water bill soliciting donations, but anyone who loves Holden Beach can make a donation.  If you would like to mail us a donation please send it to HBBC Treasurer, 125 Durham Street, Holden Beach, NC 28462 or you can make a donation online via PayPal by clicking here.  PayPal accepts major credit cards.

We know times are tough for many families and that makes this year’s donations even more appreciated.  We recognize our donors on our website here, but the most meaningful recognition is seeing beautiful gardens when you visit the island.  We hope to see you soon!

Easter comes to Holden Beach

We may all be hunkered down at Holden Beach, but the Easter Bunny isn’t!  Thanks to Larry and Donna Blume for brightening everyone’s day as we practice Social Distancing!

Sea Biscuit Pelicans

The Holden Beach Beautification Club welcomed Mary Ellen Rogers of Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter to our March meeting.  Mary Ellen brought education pelicans Tim and Tessa for us to admire.  Mary Ellen shared information about our resident pelican population, what hazards they face and why they end up at the shelter, as well as information about the other local birds she cares for.  The shelter is currently located on Oak Island and treats 500 birds annually.   Members brought supplies needed by the shelter such as detergent and trash bags.

Thanks to our Hostesses Diana Hadesty (Chair), Sharon Butler, Jane Ivey, Sandy McClellan, and Tracey Thomas who provided snacks and drinks.

We are sad to report that our April meeting has been canceled.  We have also been forced to cancel our annual Plant Sale, which is the club’s largest fundraiser.  We are however still accepting Sponsorships for 20-21.  HBBC Members:  If you took a sponsorship packet please follow up on it.  Since we lost the Plant Sale, Sponsors are more important than ever!  If your business would like to be a Sponsor let us know!   You can see last year’s sponsors here.  Information about becoming an HBBC Sponsor is here.  This is very low-cost advertising ($75) that lasts a year!
