New Landscaping Project Starts

Rendering of what the completed project will look like after the plants have had a chance to mature.
Get ready for a beautiful new welcome to Holden Beach! Work has started on the landscaping project at the mainland side of the bridge. The NCDOT contractor has begun clearing the area and plans to complete the project by June 6. This project is a joint effort for HBBC with the Town, County and NCDOT. HBBC will maintain the three beds after the first year, and the Town will provide water, electricity and mowing. Check out the progress on our website. We will update the page as the project progresses! We are so excited to see a fresh entrance to our beach!
GCNC Luncheon
HBBC recently hosted the GCNC District 11 Presidents’ Meeting. Forty four people from Emerald Isle to Calabash enjoyed morning coffee and snacks and a beautifully catered luncheon. Committee chair Donna Aycock organized the event with a committee of 10 and Donna Blume, Peggy Allen, Bennie Hall, Cecelia Weston, and Pat Harrington added their talents by creating the centerpieces. The Holden Beach Soul Line Dancers provided entertainment.
HBBC won three awards for the year: First Place for landscaping for the Padgett Garden Extension, and Third Place for our Butterfly Garden. We also received a Certificate of Honor for all the work we did during the year as a club.
May Social Brings Great Year to a Close
The Holden Beach Beautification Club held the end of year Social on May 11, at The View Restaurant. The social is the grand finale for a year of plantings, projects, landscaping and festivals. It is also the time new officers are inducted for the coming year and new chairmen of committees are announced.
Special guests were Mayor Alan Holden, Town Manager David Hewett, Town Clerk Heather Finnell and Parks and Rec Director Christy Ferguson. The Town is a big supporter of HBBC during the year and we are so grateful for their help.

Members and guests colored throughout the meeting and social. FUN! After a short speech by Gayle about the successful year for HBBC, Diana Hadesty blessed the food.

Spring Planting at Town Hall
The Landscape Committee wrapped up the spring planting for the beds around Town Hall yesterday. New Guinea Impatients, snapdragons, and other annuals were added for summer color. Padgett Garden, at the foot of the bridge, is also complete and summer planting for the other gardens will be finished soon as well.
Hundreds of plants were added to the gardens on the island this spring thanks to the Landscaping Committee and other club members. Expenses for planting the gardens are covered by donations and fundraisers such as the spring plant sale, festival booths and the Garden Tour.

Ikebana Demonstration
At the March meeting of the Holden Beach Beautification Club members and guests enjoyed a fascinating demonstration of the art of Ikebana or Japanese floral arranging. Nancy Gettys, of Weaverville and Holden Beach has been studying Ikebana for 10 years. She currently holds the rank of Junior Master in the Ichiyo School of Ikebana. Nancy has done various demonstrations and exhibitions. Some are The Southern Highland Guild Fair, The North Carolina Arboretum, The Folk Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway and several garden clubs and nurseries and retirement homes. Nancy demonstrated several forms of arrangement and the theory behind the floral designs. The simple lines of the arrangements create gorgeous displays.
