Fall Planting

Our youngest helper, Koravera Rast, 2, granddaughter of President Linda Rast, helped with this year’s Fall Planting.

The Holden Beach Beautification Club completed our main Fall Planting this week just in time for the Festival by the Sea.  We planted Padgett Garden and Town Hall with colorful annuals and will be tucking more plants into the other gardens in the coming weeks.  Thanks so much to all our helpers: Pete Schwaiger, Ros Stokes, Gayle Todd, Sharon Butler, Carolyn Metrakos, Tim and Susan Gibble, Becky Greene, Helen Miller, Kate Felmly, Kim Keech, and Linda and Koravera Rast.

Check out the plantings this weekend at Festival by the Sea and make sure to stop by our booth.  We will have garden items for sale and the proceeds go to pay for things such as the Fall Planting materials!

Festival by the Sea

The Holden Beach Beautification Club will be sponsoring a booth at Festival by the Sea this weekend, October 26-27, featuring the skills of the very talented HBBC Art Committee Ladies.  They have worked all summer on fun items to add to your yard or give as gifts.  Watch for Snowmen to brighten your yard this winter, hypertufa leaves that can be used as birdbaths or shallow planters, and our ever-popular ladybugs!  We will also have Turtle Planters, fall wreaths and Concrete mushrooms for your garden.

We also have the garden gloves that everyone raves about in all sizes – perfect for getting your fall garden set for the winter months!

We will be taking credit cards as well as cash.  Best of all, all proceeds from our booth go to fund the club and our mission to beautify the public garden areas of Holden Beach.

Alana and a neighbor tend to a lot adjacent to hers where a very colorful bee and butterfly garden has been planted. Congratulations, Alana and thank you for beautifying our island.

September Meeting Highlights

Becky Greene welcomes new member Tawanna DeAngelis with Secretary Denise Mirandola.

Holden Beach Beautification Club kicked off the 2019-2020 club year with a great speaker from Sun and Rainfall Bulk Yard.  Lori Long talked about the importance of pollinators in our gardens and to the environment.  Besides the well-known honey bees, other pollinators abound.  Bats are active pollinators and eat huge numbers of pests every night.  Their guano is also a great fertilizer.  Other species of bees also serve as pollinators, as well as butterflies, ladybugs and other insects.  We can encourage pollinators by providing the habitats they need to survive and thrive.  Bat houses and bee houses offer shelter from predators and weather.

The Club welcomed new and returning members.  President Linda Rast distributed the Yearbooks and discussed plans for the upcoming year.  Hostesses for the meeting were Kate Felmly (Chair), Judy Bayless, Marge Doyle, Joyce Montgomery, and Carolyn Metrakos.

Our October meeting on October 9 will feature Brunswick Search and Rescue and their specially trained search dogs.  Come join us, everyone is welcome!

Second Vice President Marlene Barz thanks speaker Lori Long and her helper.

Hostesses Marge Doyle, Kate Felmly and Joyce Montgomery prepared refreshments.

Summer is Here

The Holden Beach Beautification Club has been busy prepping Padgett Garden and Town Hall for summer guests and holiday visitors.  The hard work of the Landscaping Committee is in full bloom in all the gardens and the special touches from the Seasonal Decor Committee at Padgett Garden and Town Hall enhance the effect.  The patriotic decor sets off the gorgeous floral display.  Thanks to both of these committees for all the hard work!  The Holden Beach Beautification Club wishes everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July!
