Town Hall Summer Refresh

Every week our volunteers spend an hour or two in the morning caring for the island’s gardens. Dead-heading, weeding, checking that all plants receive irrigation, adding seasonal plants, and in general making sure all the garden areas on Holden Beach look their best.

This past week we focused on Town Hall. The privets that were struggling were transplanted to a new spot. In their place, a mixture of annuals, coleus, celosia, and dragon breath were added.  The sedum that is there was evened out. All of that in a nutshell, Town Hall got a summer make-over.

Fall Planting

HBBC adds fresh annual plants every spring and fall to the Town’s gardens. The Landscaping committee, chaired by Gayle Todd, recently completed the planting for this fall. Annuals were added to Padgett Garden, Padgett Garden Extension, The Boat Garden, Butterfly Garden, Town Hall and Pocket Park. In addition, a few perennials were added as well. Thanks to the Landscaping Committee for getting the gardens ready for cooler weather!

Butterfly Garden Fence

HBBC recently added a vinyl fence to delineate the Butterfly Garden and serve as a backdrop for plantings. The Butterfly Garden is located at the Fire Station on the island, 574 OBW, and features butterfly and pollinator friendly plantings such as milkweed. A variety of perennials grace the garden along with annuals which are replaced each Fall and Spring. The plantings took a beating during Hurricane Ian flooding but the damaged perennials will be replaced and the annuals will be refreshed. The garden also features statuary, butterfly houses, and a picnic table. Hope you can stop by!

They have such plants as siberian iris, mums, sedum, lilies, mexican heather, pansies, and more.  There are touches of hardscape stepping stones and whimsical seahorses.  A lovely palette!
